OUR LADY OF SORROWS: The swollen eyelids of the Madonna in the miraculous portrait pictured above drew the attention of two peasants in the year 1583. Drawing nearer, the men became overwhelmed when the Sorrowful Mother’s eyes shed tears of blood.

PRECIOUS RELIC: The linen handkerchief, which is stained with the bloody tears of Our Lady of Sorrows, is kept in the silver reliquary pictured above. The people of Rho observe the miraculous event on April 24 each year with celebrations and impressive ceremonies. A more solemn commemoration is held annually on September 15, the feast day of the Sorrowful Mother.
